About Kirrily Schwarz
Freelance Journalist | Freelance Producer | Freelance Editor
I’m a freelance writer/producer/editor based in Victoria, Australia. My main interests are legal and travel (talk about balance), but I also do breaking news and features. I’ve just started pre-production on my first documentary.
I earned my stripes in TV news.
I’ve been working in the media since 2014. I got my first break at the Nine Entertainment Company in Sydney, writing breaking news headlines for Today, a national TV breakfast show. It was a wonderful, sugar-fuelled experience that taught me sharp news judgement, how to think visually and - most of all - how to write error-free copy at warp speed. I’ve always been the trusty last-minute fix-it girl.
From there, I joined the team at News Corp Australia and started as a reporter for news.com.au, Australia’s number one digital news platform. My next step was becoming the commercial content editor for dailytelegraph.com.au (Sydney), heraldsun.com.au (Melbourne), couriermail.com.au (Brisbane) and escape.com.au (Travel). I loved diving into the colourful world of content marketing.
Five years into my career, it was time to specialise.
I love the news… but I love sinking my teeth into long-form stories even more. I completed a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice and was admitted as a lawyer of the Supreme Court of NSW. I completed my internship at News Corp Australia and used it to sharpen my reporting and feature writing skills.
These days, I’m a full-time freelance writer. I write everything from legal features to travel articles and sponsored content for some of Australia’s biggest brands (with some of Australia’s biggest publishers). I love meeting new people, learning new things, embracing new media, and telling new stories.
My whole life is basically in pursuit of a good story.
Away from the desk, I love travel and outdoor adventures. You can usually find me rock climbing, or camping, or hiking, or skiing, or road-tripping, or… well, you get the idea. I’ve visited four continents (so far) and I speak two languages: English with ease, and Indonesian with enthusiasm.
I’ve trekked to Everest Base Camp in Nepal, stood on top of the United Kingdom at Ben Nevis, SCUBA dived through beautiful coral gardens in the Cook Islands, hiked 26km for a milkshake in Switzerland, skied glorious fresh powder in Japan, taken a 19-hour train trip across northern India in 49°C heat, and been pulled over in Kansas because police thought I was driving a stolen Jeep. Naturally.
